Advanced Wire EDM Machines

American Wire EDM’s 12,000-square-foot production machine shop houses eight advanced wire EDM machining equipment. Our high-performance, high-precision, computer-automated speed machining equipment helps us deliver the parts and components our customers need with accuracy within ± 0.0001.” With our advanced EDM machining experience we can provide perfect repeatability from the first part to the thousandth and beyond.

What is Advanced EDM Machining?

Electrical discharge machining (EDM), also known as spark machining and spark eroding, is regularly used when conventional machining is difficult or impossible. EDM processing is accomplished when electrical current passes between an electrode and a work piece, which are separated by a dielectric liquid. The spark discharge then vaporize the material to machine the designed part.

When is Advanced EDM Machining Necessary?

One of the main reasons that EDM machining is used is due to conventional contact machining hardness factors. Within this area of machining EDM machining has the advantage over conventional methods. EDM can cut hardened materials, and exotic alloys, while also providing excellent surface finishes. Other advanced EDM machining benefits, include:

  • Easily machines very small pieces
  • No burrs
  • Little or no polishing is required
  • Creates complex shapes
  • Can cut extremely hard materials
  • No direct contact between tools and work pieces
